Something to consider when "Liking" or linking to someone's site.

I see a lot of people saying like me and I will like you back, or link to me and I will link back to you.

Have you considered the fact that when you "Like" or link to another business you are endorsing that business? You are in essence saying to your customers, I promote this business and I agree with their ideals and philosophies.

I would recommend that before you align your business with anyone that you thoroughly check them out. The reason I am posting this is that I was speaking to a client today who liked and linked to everyone who asked. One of the businesses he was linked to came up in a google search with a bunch of fraud reports attached. He also came up in those searches attached to the fraud report, since the person creating the fraud report wanted to get even so bad, he attached links to all the companies he was linked to telling the world to beware.

Even though my clients business is completely on the level, there is no way of knowing how many customers who search the name will find the fraud report. Sure he could spend the time to go into every report and post a reply that says I am not a fraud, but is that going to get those potential customers to his site?

Just food for thought!

I Agree as well. Similar to the "liking" - in regards to websites and the last Google update, it is possible that Google will penalize your site for other "questionable" sites that link to your site. Google offers the ability for you to "unlink" a site linking to your site which you believe to be a detriment to your site's credibility. We use their tools now to help preserve our clients site's reputation from the bad "backlinking" practices that have been going on.

Take care.

Hi Todd,

Your points are great qualitatively, and they are also correct quantitatively. With Google's latest algorithm updates (Penguin + Panda), linking to bad sources can actually penalize your site in the rankings.

Take care to keep traffic coming in from relevant sources!
